Thimayya was the first Indian to command an Infantry brigade: the 268th Indian Infantry Brigade-part of the post-World War II British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan. North Korea had the support of China and the Soviet Union while South Korea mainly had the support of the United Nations, and the United States.
